Serra Pelada Gold Mine, Para, Brazil

New World Colonies were exploited primarily in two areas: populous "industrial agriculture". Plantations such as sugar, cotton, tobacco, indigo, hemp, coffee, etc. and minerals such as gold, silver, copper, mercury, pearls, salt, diamonds, emeralds, etc.

Exploitation required that ships from England have river or ocean-coastline (especially island) access to raw products.

Gold from Serra Pelada Gold Mine had to be dug out from the earth, carried out of the mine (up tall ladders), then transported to rivers or the Atlantic Ocean coast of Brazil. Once at river or ocean ports, the raw material could then be loaded onto ships.
